At first glance, Tom Martinelli's paintings resemble 1960's Op Art or systemic painting. But while he proposes a structure of repeated circles on a grid, which inevitably produces some optical effect, that result is incidental, rather than an end in itself, and the modular structure is used intuitively, not mathematically. The work is about process, with successive layers of paint screened onto the canvas, so that the surface takes on a relief-like thickness.  Bits of color, diamond shapes and linear patterns emerge between and around the dark circles, but they are elusive - they shift and change before your eyes.  Martinelli's work also suggests sound - an aural equivalence of the vibrating visual field.  Despite their immeadiate graphic image, these paintings are "slow" and cumulative in effect, and invite a longer look.

This is a solid exhibition of rich and subtle works.
